I don’t think my experience was anything like what others go through - I hesitate to call it abuse a fair amount of the time, considering it’s such a big big word, but I allowed him to make me feel way smaller than a person or an anything really, and there was some physical stuff which was minor...

I just don’t get it. I am used to helping people. I do it every day. I have wonderful connections with people. I can empathise and I’ve never failed to give advice. So why am I so scared about talking about my own.
Maybe you should try to see talking about your own AS helping others. It helps others to know they’re not the only one and that they can overcome it as you can.
